Quebec Premier Francois Legault, concerned about the decline of the French language in the Canadian province, has set a new goal for immigrants: They should all speak French. Legault’s nationalist Coalition Avenir Quebec party was re-elected with a huge majority in October, partly on a platform of protecting French as the dominant language in the province of 8.7 million people. His speech to the legislature Wednesday laid out his priorities for his second term, including a plan to bar almost all economic immigrants who don’t speak French by 2026. “The objective is to stop the decline of French, in particular

Students at a liberal arts college complained to their school's student-run newspaper that the current all-gender housing accommodation is not sufficient and needs to be expanded. St. Paul, Minnesota-based Macalester College received backlash, although it currently accommodates transgender students by providing "intentional housing" in Doty Hall for first-years, and returning students are able to request to live in the "All-Gender Community." Currently, the "All-Gender Community" reportedly houses 10 students. Furthermore, returning students are also allowed "to live with whichever gender they identify with on single gendered floors." Yet, a student named Nico Lipman, who claims to be "non-binary" and uses

Nearly two months after the death of dozens of calves south of Meeker — originally believed to be caused by wolves — wildlife officials, veterinarians and the rancher who suffered the losses all remain perplexed as to how the animals died. The role wolves may have played has diminished since the original news release by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife on Oct. 7, but the predator has not been completely ruled out. Meanwhile, disease has gained ground as a possible cause. Jerry Klinglesmith, the Meeker-area rancher who suffered the losses reported Oct. 4, recently released what he said is the most likely

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden hails unions at almost every turn, often declaring "unions built the middle class" and that his goal is to be "the most pro-union president" in U.S. history. But as he urges Congress to intervene in a labor dispute to avert a freight rail strike before the holidays, the president is facing a backlash from labor allies. Union workers hoped to secure paid sick leave in a final contract, among other assurances, but congressional action pushed by Biden would force some terms they oppose. "The actions speak for themselves. Don't tell me what you are. Show me

Climate change activists in eight countries claim they deflated tires on more than 900 SUVs in what they call their "largest-ever night of action against SUVs." (Snip) The group says 52 cars were hit in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of New York City, as were hundreds of others across the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands, according to a post on its website. The group says their goal is to "make it impossible to own" large cars like SUVs and 4x4s "in the world's urban areas." "We're taking this action because governments and politicians have failed to

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County health officials reported more than 5,400 new COVID-19 infections from a three-day period ending Monday, along with 15 new virus-related deaths. The county Department of Public Health reported 1,640 new cases for Saturday, 2,175 for Sunday and 1,599 for Monday. The 5,414 new cases lifted the county's cumulative number from throughout the pandemic to 3,535,493. Overall official case numbers are believed to be artificially low, due to residents who use at-home tests and do not report the results to the county, and others who do not get tested at all. Donald McEachin, a Richmond Democrat who represented Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, died Monday of the secondary effects of colorectal cancer, according to a statement released by his office. He was 61. The Dutch government plans to buy and close down up to 3,000 farms near environmentally sensitive areas to comply with EU nature preservation rules. The Netherlands is attempting to cut down its nitrogen pollution and will push ahead with compulsory purchases if not enough farms take up the offer voluntarily. Farmers will be offered a deal “well over” the worth of the farm, according to the government plan that is targeting the closure of 2,000 to 3,000 farms or other major polluting businesses. Earlier leaked versions of the plan put the figure at 120 per cent of the farm’s value

LONDON -- The World Health Organization has renamed monkeypox as mpox, citing concerns the original name of the decades-old animal disease could be construed as discriminatory and racist. The U.N. health agency said in a statement Monday that mpox was its new preferred name for monkeypox, saying that both monkeypox and mpox would be used for the next year while the old name is phased out. WHO said it was concerned by the “racist and stigmatizing language” that arose after monkeypox spread to more than 100 countries. It said numerous individuals and countries asked the organization “to propose a way

A museum in London is closing one of its main exhibitions following concerns over "racist, sexist and ableist theories and language".
The Wellcome Collection says the Medicine Man display is ending after a 15-year run. When a court filing Tuesday revealed the person arrested in connection with killing five people at Club Q identifies as nonbinary and uses "they/them" pronouns, the public got its first indication that the suspect identified as a member of the LGBTQI+ community, scrambling the prevailing narrative around the attack. It also prompted the question: If the suspect is nonbinary, why would an LGBTQI+ person attack their own? The 22-year-old suspect faces 10 preliminary charges, including five felony counts of bias-motivated crimes causing bodily injuries, according to court records. Authorities have declined to characterize any potential motives beyond the arrest-only
