The California driver involved in Wednesday’s wrong-way crash that left 25 sheriff's office recruits injured has been charged with attempted murder on a peace officer as authorities weigh additional charges, officials confirmed Thursday.
Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, was arrested around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, hours after he careened a dark-colored SUV into a pack of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruits, the LASD announced in an email Thursday. He has since been charged with attempted murder on a peace officer, with "additional charges pending," the LASD said.

Beginning in fiscal year 2023, the Department of Energy will require applicants for research funding to explain how their research projects will incorporate the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
According to the Department of Energy website, applicants will be required to attach a “Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plan” to their funding application in which they will “describe the activities and strategies” they’ll rely on “to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their research projects.”

Authorities served search warrants Wednesday morning in connection with the slaying of Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German, Las Vegas police said.
Around 7 a.m., reporters observed uniformed officers and police vehicles outside the home of Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles, who had been the focus of recent reporting by German. Authorities also had taped off a section around Telles’ home.
Shortly before 9 a.m., police said they were serving search warrants in the 7200 block of Bronze Circle, where the killing occurred.

CALIFORNIA (WTVO) — With California’s power grid under strain due to extreme heat and high demand, the utility grid operator is asking residents to avoid charging their electric vehicles. This comes days after the state announced a plan to ban the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035.
The California Independent System Operator is asking residents for “voluntary energy conservation” over the Labor Day weekend.

Albuquerque authorities have detained a primary suspect in the recent killing of at least two of four Muslim men, and have identified him as 51-year-old Muhammad Syed.
Albuquerque Police Department (APD) Chief Harold Medina announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, "We tracked down the vehicle believed to be involved in a recent murder of a Muslim man in Albuquerque. The driver was detained and he is our primary suspect for the murders. We will update the media later this afternoon."

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — The suspect in the killing of an upstate New York police officer in July was released from prison two months earlier, and could face a life sentence without parole based on new charges a prosecutor announced Wednesday.
Kelvin Vickers, 21, is charged in an eight-count indictment with aggravated murder, attempted murder, assault and weapons counts for the July 21 attack that killed Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, 54, and wounded Officer Sino Seng as the two sat in an unmarked vehicle. A funeral for the fallen officer was held Monday.
